Hundres of pakistani lawyers held in crackdown

Thousands of lawyer battled police on the streets of Pakistan yesterday as President Pervez Musharaf faced the first signs of concerted resistance to his declaration of emergency rule. In the city of Lahore, baton-welding police fired tear gases and clashed with 2,000 lawyers following the arrest of over 1,500 of the president's oppnent after his imposition of de facto martial law on saturday evening.
