Heroes Don't Run

Adam wanted to join the marines as soon as he got to his grandfather's farm.His grandfather was an old soldier from world war 1.He had lost an arm during the war. Adam's father had served too, however he died in the war.He wanted to join up now, as by the time he reached eighteen the war might be over.He persuaded his grandfather to sign him up and his grandfather finally agreed. Adam reported to the base camp . After weeks of training, Adam had made new friends like Ben, Andy and Roy.Finally there were ready to fight the war.They boarded the LST(landing ship for troops). They had been on the LST of weeks , and still didn't know where they were going.All they knew there were in the middle of the Pacific. Some days later, they started hearing the sound of distant guns, explosions. One morning, they woke to find themselves in the midst of an Amanda of allied warships-more ships than he had seen in his life. There had been a battle here. The commanding officer , assembled them on the tank deck and said that they were at Okinawa and it is where they were attacking. Adam was feeling half fear and half rage.He thought that now they were paying the Japanese for what they did to them,for starting the war and killing his father. The LST unloaded directly on the beach, Ben and Adam stayed together,but had lose sight of Andy and Roy. Everyone was milling around, there didn't seems to be any order, and it didn't look like anyone was in charge.Adam meet Sergent Rosie who had been fighting here for about three weeks.They stayed together, suddenly a Shell exploded and flipped Adam over, burying him in dirt.Everyone was safe except Ben, he was killed when a piece of shrapnel skinned him on the head. Adam was trembling when he saw that Ben was dead.Everyday was the same thing, Japanese were everywhere. They kept pushing.Men were hit all the time. Bullets could kill you,Shrapnel could kill and sometimes a shell concussion killed a man.Before that there were 250 men in Adam group, but there were only 50 of them still on their feet after 10 days.Rosie and Adam where in a shell hole so deep. Suddenly a mortar shell exploded on top of them. Adam was sent to a Hospital in Honolulu as he was unable to fight anymore. The blast had blown fragments of rock and dirt into his body. He was then sent home later. About a month later, America use a new kind of bomb on japan and they surrendered .The war was over, whenever a civilian called Adam a hero, he would tell them that there were many other heroes ,but most of them never got a medal or came home.There was another world, a dark world of guns and death,but that world was over maybe forever. They had made a better world.It was the only way to understand why why Adam's father had died and Ben and Rosie and all the others.
